Annual South Canyon Staff Ride

June 25, 2009, Glenwood Springs, CO - submitted by Paul Cerda, Supt. Alpine IHC - On May 27th and 28th, the Alpine IHC and Redding IHC, along with regional representatives from the National Park Service and Forest Service, engaged in the annual South Canyon Staff Ride in Glenwood Springs, CO.

South Canyon Staff Ride

Wednesday evening consisted primarily of introductions, facilitators' expectations, summary of South Canyon Fire events, and group participation in tactical decision games, which were designed to mimic the South Canyon Fire timeline and correlative events. On Thursday morning, staff ride participants and facilitators hikes to the accident site, pausing periodically along the way to engage in tactical decision games and to discuss key safety issues and human factors associated with the South Canyon Fire.

On Thursday afternoon, upon arriving at the accident site via the West Drainage, participants engaged in a final tactical decision game along the West Flank Fireline. Shortly thereafter, groups descended the ridge via the East Drainage, and reconvened with their crews before the evening staff ride session.

On Thursday evening, facilitators and participants met a final time to share thoughts and discussed lessons learned. Subsequently, we passed a hat to accept donations for the Wildland Firefighter Foundation. We are pleased to say that we raised $660.00, and enclosed is a check for that amount. Additionally, we are grateful to all those who were able to contribute.

Thank you for all you do.
